Widely regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions in the US (and arguably the best college from Texas), Rice University is known for its excellent academics. Because of its location in Houston, one of the most multicultural cities in the US, Rice equips its students with an international perspective. The school is also relatively small, and thus each student gets a lot of individualized attention. As such, Rice is known for its top-tier programs, particularly in engineering and business (but you certainly can’t go wrong with any of the programs at Rice). My fascination with polymers drives my desire to study chemistry and nanotechnology at Rice.
“Polymer” comes from two Greek words: polu—many, meros—parts. Berzelius invented the name; Staudinger adapted it to its modern definition. In 1920, “Über Polymerisation” served as his thesis:
the molecules in rubber are composed of repeating “parts” chemically bonded together to form macromolecules.
My “polymeric” enthusiasm started at [School Redacted] University’s [Organization Redacted] Program. After engineering electrically conductive 3D-printer filaments and biodegradable plastics, I was hooked. Next
summer, I pursued polymer chemistry at the [Organization Redacted] Program, optimizing a method of converting plant waste into water-purifying absorbents. The versatility and world-changing potential that polymers possess intrigue me.
Staudinger’s discovery explains the unique properties of polymers found in plastics, rubbers, and
more; I want to build upon his bold understanding of the molecular structure to advance the polymers shaping our world today—I believe Rice will help me do just that.

Driving home, I see neighborhoods of different socioeconomic status. My old playground is among the low-income housing where many of my playmates will not graduate, their success impacted by systemic patterns of educational inequity. Beyond Rice’s intellectually stimulating community of service-focused clubs and research- oriented programs, Rice’s focus on a curriculum that prioritizes my multidisciplinary academic pursuits ensures I’d never give up on my passions for education and science. Through Rice’s partnership with TMC, I’d study neuronal communication and the genetic journey of debilitating disorders while researching how to use CRISPR to screen for allergen cells. I’d also learn society’s role on a child’s perceptual and intellectual development through Professor Zimmerman’s Cognitive Psychology class, and use this knowledge to improve educational access in Houston district schools by working through Rice Student Volunteer Programs. In my pursuit to be a Rice Owl, I hope to succeed in becoming an agent of change.

My parents never let me sit at the kids’ table. For as long as I can remember, my parents have always encouraged me to be unafraid and speak to adults to learn from them. This pushed me to mature and find my way through different environments, such as new schools I was always joining, internships where my goal was to apprentice, and tennis camps with more experienced players I wanted to learn from.
By seeking wisdom from others and sometimes even contributing my own to the conversation, I learned to relate my child-sized problems to the greater adult issues they discussed. Because I grew up at the dinner table surrounded by adults, I’ve grown used to listening to advice, and I’ve been able to discuss these life lessons with them openly. Through these discussions, I was frequently the odd man out, with a different opinion from those around me, but that made the conversation all the more fruitful. Whether it was discussions of future global issues or gossip about family friends, it allowed me to come away with key life lessons about the world and how to navigate it.
Moreover, as I’ve spent my life as an international student, this ability to relate to others has helped me become part of communities all over the world, independent of who is around me. Through different languages, perspectives, and groups, I’ve found common threads to relate to. Even though I can fit in many places, I can remain authentic and be myself, as I embody the lessons I have learned and can give to others. Through university summer camps, I also had the opportunity to learn from faculty and students, with whom I tried my best to interact. I asked questions and understood what their lives were like compared to my own.
My friends sometimes say I have an old soul and even sound like an older man. Though this may just be poking fun, I think of this as a good thing and a sign that I have been able to take in lessons from those that surrounded me a lot of my life. Recognizing that they have lived multiples of my life before I was even on earth shows me the scope of the lessons one can learn without others' experiences. Even now, I will tell my friends I can’t hang out with them so I can sit at the adult’s table with my parents and their friends to feel that bit older once more.
In the end, sitting with the adults allowed me to understand the value of learning from the wealth of experiences of others. Knowing their value at Rice and in the future will help me take the first step and contribute to the larger community. By bridging disparities of all kinds, I can be a resource in all places, creating an environment of collaboration. I hope to bring this spirit of understanding and self-reflection to Rice, where I can learn from and contribute to others.

If our mission wasn't successful, the world would come to an end.
Well, that's how it felt to be a part of the [Organization Redacted] program. And I was chosen as a mentor and guide for hardware engineering.
Led by Professor [Name Redacted], our goal at [Organization Redacted] was to make high schoolers in India more excited about engineering and science. Especially during the lumpy time of the pandemic when school wasn't really engaging students.
We were inspiring the next generation of changemakers and our mission was very important. I was proud to be a part of it.
But I was worried. Navigating through the complex world of electronics and robotics was incredibly tough during the pandemic as we didn't have access to any essential components and equipment. A global chip shortage and a pandemic were against me. But I always enjoyed taking on challenges that stopped me from preaching what I love.
After spending days surfing on Google and YouTube, I figured out how I could teach and provide an immersive experience on engineering completely online. It was through virtual simulations.
After days of trial and error, I designed 3D virtual electronics kits and circuit simulations for each session. These simulations allowed the attendees to follow the sessions closely and learn how to use different components. It also empowered them to modify it and create their own projects—right in their homes. All they had to do was just drag and drop.
Each online session had over 500 teenagers from all over India. I was nervous. Being a huge believer in project-based learning, I started by teaching them the basics of the Arduino microcontroller board by guiding them on how they could use a light-dependent resistor to create a simple laser maze. Educating and tutoring my mentees made me more expressive.
Whether it was explaining how inductors used Faraday’s Laws of Magnetic Induction to resist change in current or how ultrasonic sensors emit ultrasonic sound waves to calculate distance, I delved deep into each topic every day so I could answer all their queries. It made me a better engineer and learner.
Watching my mentees develop their skills day by day was incredibly gratifying. But nothing was as satisfying as seeing my mentees create their own tangible products and PCBs. Seeing this, it felt like the future of the whole world was in my hands. I created an actual impact!
My experience with [Organization Redacted] made me realize that challenges and limitations often create unconventional innovations. And yes, we made 500+ future changemakers all over India excited about engineering. The world isn’t going to end after all!
