Programming enzyme-responsive targeting systems and using genomic technologies to develop novel cancer immunotherapies, modern medicine is being transformed within Northwestern’s labs. Utilizing the experience I've gained in bioinformatics, annotating and publishing bacteriophage genomes, I have aspirations to advance the viability of gene therapy as a treatment, transforming today’s doctors into tomorrow’s scientists. Joining a faculty of pioneers at the intersection of engineering, biological, and physical sciences, classes like Liu’s Foundations of Regenerative Engineering and Scott’s Biological Performance of Materials will allow me to explore the applications of genetic engineering and biodegradable polymers in tissue regeneration.

Further opportunities abound in Northwestern’s Independent Study courses and affiliated research institutions. Engineering novel immunotherapies through mammalian cell-based devices and cell-free systems at the Center for Synthetic Biology, I’ll eagerly unearth ubiquitous yet unexplained biological phenomena, leveraging them to innovate bioengineering applications in medicine. Teaming up with similarly inspired students in the CURE club, we’ll tackle open-ended, real-world medical challenges using regenerative engineering technologies. I plan to continue my work with bacteriophages through cutting-edge research in faculty labs, incorporating synthetic biology to develop phage-based antibacterial agents, drug-delivery systems, and biomaterials.

When not hurtling towards prescient solutions, I look forward to collaborating and learning from other students, eager to explore my Persian identity, values, and ambitions in Northwestern’s Middle Eastern and North African Studies program. Like wandering blindly in a dark room, whenever I speak Farsi with my mother I inevitably hit a wall. I yearn to set the box of my illiteracy ablaze, and MENAs friendly language tables and movie nights add kinder to my fire. Growing alongside my newfound Northwestern family, exploring the frontiers of medical research alongside Persia’s language and literature, I aspire for us to create something beyond what we could individually achieve!
