My interest in psychology began with an episode from the Disney Channel show “Dog With A Blog”. One character had a psychology project that required her to hide a beeping noise in a room and record her family’s reactions, all of which were very different. Some ignored the noise, some looked for the source, and others went berserk trying to turn it off. Why did this happen? In seventh grade, my science fair experiment was testing the effect of smell on taste by removing sense of smell and vision. Though this was hilarious to watch, I noticed during the experiment that incorrect preconceived notions of the food seemed to have drastic effects on what the alleged taste was. Why was that? An Abnormal Psychology unit showed that the cure for schizophrenia isn’t a medicine that decreases dopamine intake, even though schizophrenics have excessive dopamine receptors. Why not? Along with ambition, an insatiable thirst for knowledge has been an important factor in my drive throughout school. I want to pursue psychology because it’ll answer my endless barrage of questions, but thus far, I feel as if I’ve only scratched the subject’s surface. My heart has always been in the work, regardless of what I knew about psychology and where I learned to identify it. I want to use my curiosity and psychology’s solutions to find answers for not only myself, but eventually, every other curious individual.

As you think ahead to the process of learning during your college years, how will you define a successful college experience?

From analyzing and creating animations to conducting experiments on thermodynamic gas laws, my high school years were marked by my favorite type of learning: practical, hands-on experiences. Whether learning about electrical circuits in the classroom or building a robot at a Makerspace, my success is intertwined with applying what I learned to real-world problems. Thus, when reading through CMU’s undergraduate programs, IDeATe piqued my interest. The project-based courses will allow me to learn concepts through constructive experiences. By taking 18-540: Rapid Prototyping of Computer Systems, I will understand computer-aided systems so I can make software simulations for physics experiments. Through IDeATe, I can extend knowledge gained from my defense research experience by building more software systems that model mechanical systems with higher accuracy. I aim to work in the aerospace industry in the future, and the skills I attain from the courses at CMU will help me analyze aircraft launches. I am excited to continue pursuing rocketry as a part of the Carnegie Mellon Rocket Command team. I hope to enhance my knowledge of rocket science to make contributions that advance space exploration. The team’s recent project for the NASA Student Launch Initiative inspired me to use the theoretical knowledge I gain from courses such as Physics for Engineering Students and apply it to our aircraft projects. Moreover, collaborating with my peers will introduce me to new design approaches I would not have considered before. Immersing myself in out-of-classroom experiences will stimulate my intellectual development. At CMU, learning how to apply classroom concepts to develop solutions to scientific obstacles will propel me on my journey to becoming a computational physicist.

Growing up in an all-boys Catholic school in Japan, I was extensively taught to accept others with respect and compassion. However, I never understood the need for these teachings because accepting each other came easily when surrounded by people of the same sex, race, culture, and religion. It wasn’t until I transferred to an international school in [Redacted Content] that I grasped the essence of my childhood education. Surrounded by peers from over 60 countries, I faced countless differences beyond my comfort zone and struggled to open up. One day, I visited my [Redacted Content] friend’s house and during dinner, he passionately told me to try his local cuisine: frog legs. The food was so foreign to anything I’d ever eaten and I hesitated. I was on the verge of turning down his offer, but seeing his enthusiasm left me no other choice but to try the amphibian creature. Tentatively tasting the exotic delicacy, I was astonished by its delicious chicken-like flavor. In that moment, I finally understood the principles of my early education: accepting one another involves respecting each other’s differences and embracing them with compassion. This new attitude motivated me to become more adventurous throughout my four years in [Redacted Content]. I formed everlasting bonds with friends around the world, engaged in cultural awareness programs, and became a student council president to hear and communicate the diverse opinions of my peers to the school administrators. My background has taught me that accepting differences leads to discoveries that expand one’s own perspective.
