42 Senior Project Ideas for High School Students

A strong senior project answers a clear question. It ends in finished work, serves a real audience, and shows what you learned.

That answer matters more than the topic. "Build an app" is not a project yet. "Build and test a bus reminder for students who miss the late bus" is. One gives you a category. The other gives you a user and a problem. It also gives you a way to learn whether the app works.

Below are 42 senior project ideas in science, tech, history, art, community work, and career study. You can use one as written. But the smarter move is to take its shape and swap in a subject you already care about.

One warning before the list: a senior project does not impress colleges by itself. A rushed nonprofit with a logo and no real work is still a rushed project. A careful repair guide for the theater's old light board may sound smaller. Yet it can show far more skill, grit, and good sense.

How do you choose a project you can finish?

Score each idea from 1 to 5 on these five questions. Don't pick the one with the fanciest title. Pick the one with the best total and no fatal flaw.

Set one hard limit before you choose. Maybe you can spend only $40 or work only on Saturdays. You may decide not to interview minors or to use public data only. Limits make projects less flashy and much more real.

Want a science, health, or green project?

1. Map heat around your school. Measure the heat at the same marked spots over several days. Compare shade, pavement, grass, and nearby walls. Make a map, explain your method, and suggest one practical way to cool the site.

2. Run a home water audit. Track where water is used in your home or another home that agrees to take part. Test one water-saving change. Report what did and did not improve, and don't claim that one home stands for the whole city.

3. Build a local pollinator field guide. Take photos of bees, moths, and other pollinators in one park or schoolyard for several weeks. Make a guide with the place, plant, date, and your level of trust in each ID. Mark any doubtful IDs.

4. Test a low-cost air quality question. Compare particle readings near pickup traffic with readings at a quiet spot. Use the same device and schedule. Your project is the test and its limits, not a health claim about any person.

5. Study food waste. Get permission from a cafeteria, club, or home. Pick one kind of waste and measure it before and after a small change. A better sign or new serving setup is enough for a test.

6. Repeat a safe published experiment. Pick a study that is safe for a classroom. Follow its method as closely as your tools allow, then compare your result with the first study. Your best section may explain why the results differ.

7. Plan native plants for one site. Study the light, soil, water flow, space, and care needs of a real patch of ground. Make a short plan with plant choices, sources, costs, and the tradeoffs you made.

Research does not need a university lab. Our guide to research opportunities for high school students covers more formal paths. But a small local study can teach the same habits. Ask a clear question, choose a method, record what happened, and admit the limits.

If your school offers AP Research, learn its rules before you plan around it. The College Board's official AP Research page says students choose a topic and do their own research. They also write a paper and present their findings. Students must first finish AP Seminar. So AP Research is a course path, not a contest you can enter from outside the class.

Want a tech or engineering project?

8. Build a small school app. Solve one narrow problem, such as finding open study rooms or tracking gear returns. Talk with a few likely users. Build the smallest version that works, then see if they can use it without your help.

9. Check a school website for access. Test a set of pages for keyboard use, image text, headings, contrast, and form labels. Rank the problems. Fix one page or mock up a better one if you have permission.

10. Build a low-cost aid. Work with one person who agrees to take part or with an occupational therapist. Find one small daily problem. Then test a handle, holder, reminder, or storage tool. Save each version and make no health claims.

11. Make a sensor-based monitor. Use a microcontroller to track soil moisture, room heat, noise, or another safe measure. Check it against a trusted tool and log each failure. Write the code and wiring guide so another student can follow them.

12. Fix a frustrating checkout system. Study how people borrow sports gear, library devices, costumes, or lab tools. Build a labeled storage test, sign-out plan, or simple stock list. Test it with the people who manage the items.

13. Make a small learning game. Choose one idea that students often get wrong, such as compound interest or cell division. Build one playable level and watch where users get stuck. Revise the game from those tests.

14. Repair and explain an object. Find the fault in a safe appliance, instrument, bike part, or device. Make a repair log, parts diagram, and cost check. Be clear about anything that still does not work.

An app may fit the Congressional App Challenge. Still, don't let a contest define the whole project. Use the official student page to check the current rules. Confirm that your district takes part before you choose that route.

Interested in history or social science?

15. Record an oral history of one local change. Talk with adults who lived through a school merger, new development, move, business closure, or cultural shift. Get consent and save the audio. Check dates against records, then edit a short public set.

16. Make a local history archive. Pick one street, building, group, or public space. Trace its past through news stories, maps, photos, and public records. Publish a timeline that makes clear what the records show and what you think they mean.

17. Study whose voices appear in a course. Choose one class, reading list, or textbook unit. Sort the authors by place, time, or point of view with clear rules. Show the pattern without saying that your count alone proves bias or quality.

18. Translate a useful local guide. With review from a fluent speaker, translate a school, library, transit, or public service guide that people need. Test whether a reader can finish the task. Note any phrase or choice that did not translate well.

19. Explain one local policy. Pick one school board or city issue and read the source files. Talk with people who play different roles. Write a plain English guide that keeps the policy apart from what each side thinks will happen.

20. Study one question with public data. Use a small data set on transit, weather, votes, library use, housing permits, or another topic you know. Share how you cleaned it and why you chose each chart. State what the data cannot answer.

21. Build a National History Day-style project. Make a claim with first-hand records and later sources. Present it as a display, film, play, paper, or site. If you want to compete, the official National History Day contest page says projects start at school. They may then move on to regional or affiliate contests.

Want an art, media, or design project?

22. Make a short film about one hidden task. Follow how school food arrives, costumes get built, a garden runs, or morning news gets made. Plan each interview and get release forms. Check every claim, then edit for one clear audience.

23. Make a photo essay with clear reporting rules. Follow one place, routine, craft, or group for several weeks. Base each caption on what you saw and heard. Don't invent a story after you take the photos.

24. Write and record a set of music. Create three or four linked pieces for one instrument or group. Try them with live players and listen for parts that feel hard or unclear. Save the scores, recordings, and notes from each change.

25. Design a brand kit for a real small group. Ask a club, team, family shop, or local group about its audience and daily needs. Make a logo, type and color choices, templates, and simple rules for their use.

26. Adapt a story to a new form. Turn your own work or a story free of copyright into a short film, audio play, comic, game scene, or live reading. Explain what you cut or added. Show why the new form called for those choices.

27. Build a small show. Choose one clear question. Borrow or make a small set of objects or art, write labels, and plan the path through the room. Test the show with a few viewers before it opens.

28. Make a design guide for your school. Check posters, forms, signs, or event art for clear text and a shared look. Make templates that fix the main problems. Then ask real users to make something with them.

Community, education, and civic ideas

29. Build a tutoring unit, not a tutoring nonprofit. Identify one skill a small group needs, write four to six lessons, teach them with permission, and revise from student work. Your evidence is the curriculum and what you changed, not an inflated claim about lives transformed.

30. Create a newcomer guide for one school process. Explain course selection, club registration, bus routes, cafeteria payment, or another confusing system. Interview staff and recent newcomers, then test whether the guide answers the questions they actually had.

31. Improve one library or resource collection. Work with the person responsible for it to identify a real gap, such as bilingual picture books, beginner coding kits, or local-history sources. Research choices, work within a fixed budget, and create a useful catalog or display.

32. Design a volunteer onboarding kit. For an organization where you already serve, document the tasks new volunteers struggle to learn. Produce a checklist, short training video, safety notes, and a feedback form, then watch one new volunteer use it.

33. Run a small public-information campaign. Pick a specific behavior and audience, such as correct battery recycling in one apartment building. Research the rules, create materials, place them with permission, and measure reach or compliance without inventing causation.

34. Map access to one local resource. Study the location, hours, cost, language access, and transportation for public study spaces, food support, recreation, or health services. Publish a usable map and state when the information was last checked.

35. Facilitate a community story event. Plan a reading, listening session, mini-conference, or demonstration around one focused topic. Recruit a realistic number of contributors, create an accessible program, and archive the work after the event ends.

Business, career, and personal-interest ideas

36. Test a tiny business with a fixed budget. Sell one product or service for a limited period, track every cost and hour, and compare your assumptions with actual demand. A project that loses $23 but teaches you why is still useful if the accounting is honest.

37. Write an operations manual for a family business. Document one repeated process that currently lives in someone's head, such as opening, inventory, order packing, or customer follow-up. Ask a second person to use the manual and revise the confusing steps.

38. Conduct a career-task experiment. Instead of only shadowing a professional, complete a safe, supervised version of one real task: draft a mock client brief, analyze a public dataset, create a lesson, or prepare a lab protocol. Ask the professional to critique the work.

39. Build a consumer comparison tool. Choose a product or service your peers actually evaluate, define transparent criteria, collect current information, and create a spreadsheet or website. Explain conflicts, missing data, and who should not use your recommendation.

40. Create a personal finance curriculum for one life event. Build a short guide around a first paycheck, apartment budget, used-car purchase, or college meal plan. Use realistic scenarios, cite current rules or rates where needed, and have an adult expert review the risky parts.

41. Document mastery of a craft. Choose a specific build, repair, recipe set, garment, performance technique, or fabrication skill. Set quality criteria at the start, log failed attempts, seek critique from an experienced practitioner, and finish with a teachable guide.

42. Solve a recurring problem in your own household. Design a better medication reminder that makes no medical decisions, meal-planning system, tool organizer, maintenance schedule, or shared calendar. Test it for several weeks and report honestly whether anyone kept using it.

Turn a broad idea into a credible scope

Most senior projects fail in the sentence where the student describes the scope. The verbs are too big: solve, transform, eliminate, revolutionize. Replace them with verbs you can observe: map, compare, build, test, document, teach, revise.

Here are four common scope repairs:

Notice what changed. Each smaller project names a place or group, a bounded output, and a method. It also leaves room for failure. That's good. A project where the prototype confuses users can still be excellent work if you show how you tested it and what you would change.

If you hope to enter a science fair, check rules before collecting data, especially for projects involving people, animals, microorganisms, chemicals, or controlled equipment. The Society for Science's official ISEF page says competing at ISEF begins at a Society-affiliated fair and links its current rules and guidelines. Start there, then follow your local fair's process. A project can be valuable without reaching ISEF, and most projects will not.

A 10-week senior project plan

Ten weeks sits in the middle of the usual 8-12-week window. If you have eight weeks, combine weeks 2 and 3, then 7 and 8. If you have twelve, give testing and revision an extra week each.

Have one adult act as an advisor, but make the ownership line clear. An advisor can help with access, safety, specialist feedback, and a stuck decision. They should not quietly become the project manager, writer, programmer, or researcher.

Document the work without turning it into content theater

Keep a project log from week one. Each entry needs a date, what you tried, what happened, the next decision, and a link or photo pointing to the relevant evidence. Ten plain entries written while the work happens are better than a polished diary reconstructed the night before your presentation.

Save versions instead of overwriting them. Use file names, cloud version history, or code commits that let you compare the rough draft with the final one. For physical work, photograph the same angle at each stage and include a ruler or label when scale matters. For interviews, record only with permission and keep consent notes with the files.

Audience feedback needs context. "Everyone loved it" tells a reader nothing. Record who tested the work in broad, privacy-safe terms, what task you asked them to complete, where they got stuck, and what you changed afterward. Don't fish for compliments or manufacture a survey because percentages look official.

Your final reflection should answer questions that a project display cannot:

  1. What did you believe at the start that turned out to be wrong?
  2. Which decision changed the quality or direction of the work most?
  3. What evidence made you revise rather than defend your first idea?
  4. What remains unfinished, unreliable, or outside the scope?
  5. If another student continued the project, what should they do first?

Is a senior project impressive for college admissions?

Sometimes. The project title itself carries very little weight. What can matter is the evidence underneath it: sustained effort, increasing skill, sensible choices, useful collaboration, and an honest account of results.

Admissions officers do not need every student to found a nonprofit, publish research, win a national competition, or launch a company. Those outcomes depend on money, geography, school resources, adult access, and luck as well as student ability. Pretending everyone starts from the same set of opportunities makes for bad advice.

A project helps your application when it fits the rest of your interests and you can explain the decisions in detail. It hurts when the language is much bigger than the work, a parent or paid adult clearly drove it, or the project appeared three weeks before applications with no evidence of use or learning.

Choose one idea and write the one-page brief from week one. If you cannot name the audience, output, constraint, and definition of done on one page, narrow the project before you start buying materials or recruiting anyone.
