Personal Statement
Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? "If you were born into a family with both parents, take 1 step forward.” “If you've ever been ridiculed for something you can't change about yourself, take 1 step back.” “If you've ever had to stop studying due to family finances, take 1 step back." In the privilege game, all 10 of us started at the same point, but after 15 turns, some took 5 steps forward, took 3 steps, and some did not take any steps. And, I was behind the finishing line before it even began. I can’t tell exactly what that feeling is called exactly. A mixture of unconfident, lost, and heartbroken. Yet, there was a noticeable change in our friendship. Their eyes were discreetly on me when our conversation started to turn to a new car model. My childhood was not familiar with the new fashion design, but instead, the new flavor released by the cotton candyman at the tip of an alley and the engine smoke from dad’s old motorbike, a topic that hardly fit in with their interest or childhood. As hours passed, each of them settled their seats in one of their shiny cars, leaving me behind in the midst of an evening. Out of the game, I boarded the bus to school, which started at 6 p.m. As usual, the road in high time was full of people, some students still holding a stack of documents in their hands and middle-aged housewives calculating total living expenses at the end of the month. Their chattering coincidentally came to my ears, as I listened and their stories reached my heart. A father, who usually worked with cement, proudly mentioned his son to a friend of his. Through his description, I could possibly imagine his son as a smart, elegant kid whose eyes can lighten full of the aspiration to learn. But the book price had gone up, and he had no choice but to work not from nine to five. Outside, the wind blew and knocked every blow into the side of the bus. Every detail hit me hard. Growing up in a middle-class family, I have access to the best high school in Ho Chi Minh City with enough mental and financial support from my family that I never had to consider the price of a textbook. How lucky am I?

Davidson College
There are just under 4,000 4-year colleges and universities in the United States. Being as specific as possible, what interests you most about Davidson College? Stephen Curry was the one who introduce me to Davidson College. But, researching more about the school, it is both mental and physical support from the community that attracts me the most. The way Davidson College Presbyterian Church (DPCP) bakes cookies for students during exams really touched my heart. And I’m no doubt excited to experience the tradition: Cookie Study Break. Myers-Briggs Tests is a way Davidson College use to find student compatible roommate. And it is impressive to me that a school does not only care about academic quality but also life quality and network. Spiritual life here varies with churches of all religions and supportive associations. Last but not least is the support from my direct professor, I heard many reviews that professors hold office hours in Union to give students extra help and attend all the events or activities to maintain a close bond. Moreover, Davidson College displayed what a family should have: the bond of trust. Instead of being forced to follow the rule, we have our mutual responsibility to refrain from cheating and lying. It’s exciting that everyone is a part of that “mission” and tries to protect the “king”: Honor Code. The Union seems like our main palace where all kinds of fun socials are hosted — from Spring Holics to midnight pancake breakfasts. With all the reasons below, I feel connected and look forward to being a part of Davidson College. Davidson encourages students to explore curiosities in and out of the classroom. What is a topic, activity or idea that excites you? Tell us why. Examples may include hobbies, books, interactions, music, podcasts, movies, etc. (250-300 words) 6 AM: Facial cleanser 6:15 AM: Makeup 11 AM, 4 PM, and 8 PM: Reapply makeup 10 PM: Deep cleansing Common Application

Identity Question: We fully acknowledge application forms like this often require people to categorize their race, ethnicity, gender, and/or other identities by checking boxes. Two of Macalester's four values are Multiculturalism and Internationalism and one way we try to live these values is providing students space to express their identities "beyond a check box." You may use this space to help us better understand the importance of one or more identities in your life and how they might shape your worldview.
