Pre-med history lover @ Yale
It was important to me to only apply to schools I genuinely loved - but being my indecisive seIf, I still ended up doing 17 applications! Thank goodness for the Common App. Because I was only applying to schools I would seriously consider, I only applied to "safety" or "target" schools that I would attend over my flagship state school, UMass Amherst, and spent most of my time on "reach" schools. I didn't apply to state schools where I would get "out-of-state" financial aid, because I knew that was not a realistic option for my family. The result was that I was able to compare lots of great options once I got my decisions and financial aid packages back, without having wasted my time on any schools I wasn't excited about.
