I didn’t think much about college until the fall of 11th grade, when my mom bought me a few “300-and-something best college” type books. I sat down with them for a few minutes every day and skimmed the facts about each school, flagging any that interested me with a sticky note. From there, I signed up for virtual information sessions with my favorite schools from the book, and took notes about each one in a notebook. I made a list of the information most important to me, like participation in Greek life or guaranteed housing, and paid special attention to taking down those details for each school. During fall of my senior year, I went back through my notes, starring my biggest green and red flags, and narrowing down my list. After considering criteria like size, location, curriculum, and student life, I had a list of my top 20. In-person campus visits helped knock some more off the list, and by January I had applied to 16 schools!
