If you could change anything in the world, what would it be? Explain why and how you would change it. As Kevin landed facedown, his shirt rolled up exposing a series of rashes and scars on his back. I was about to tag him, but he had tripped over his laces, falling into the sea of wood chips. Feeling uneasy and deeply worried for my friend, I asked him why his back had such markings. After some hesitation, Kevin described the feeling to me, the sting of his father’s back scratcher digging into his skin, the words of hatred that almost made his father unrecognizable in his monstrous rage, and the emptiness whenever he made eye contact with his father. At an age where my only concerns were winning Chinese Bulldog and collecting the best Pokemon cards, I couldn’t fathom the pain Kevin was going through. This was supposed to be a secret, for if anyone found out, his family would be shattered; though Kevin’s father was abusive, he was the sole provider for their family. The following year, Kevin had moved away. I wanted to help but felt powerless as an eight year old.
Given the ability to change the world, I’d make sure that no child would have to go through abuse. The statistics are alarming, with over 4 million child abuse reports every year, and another child
