pianist, finance savvy, musical theatre lover, gay ex-Mormon from the Midwest; love to explore NYC and see Broadway shows with friends
I was fortunate to have a fee waiver for my Common App applications, so I knew I wanted to apply to many schools. Though I ultimately chose to attend Columbia University, I was not set on an Ivy League. I decided to apply to a lot of top schools that I knew gave good financial aid, with a hope of being able to affordably attend a top-25 school. I initially applied to Princeton in the Restrictive Early Action cycle, but was deferred. I ended up applying to 19 total schools, with 7 of them being Ivy league institutions. I also applied to some in-state schools as safeties. Once I was accepted to 12 of those colleges and waitlisted at 4, I really had to consider financial aid. I am paying for college myself, so financial aid was very important to me. Luckily, I earned a few scholarships that made it easier for me to choose Columbia over my state school (University of Missouri). Looking back on it now, I could not have made a better choice; there is no place I would rather be at this time in my life.

What would you do differently if you were to redo the application cycle?
I would spend more time on the supplemental essays. I spent a lot of time on the main Common App essay, but I used a lot of the same content in my supplemental essays for different colleges. This didn

What questions were you asked during your interviews?
I only had one interview despite applying to 19 schools. It was a Princeton interview with an alumna from my home state. We did it over Zoom and it was very casual. She mainly asked about my interests
