Personal Statement Throughout high school, I frequently found myself on a phone call late into the night with classmates, preparing for upcoming exams. It was a joyous moment when my friend, who felt so helpless a few nights prior to the exam, wore a grin on his face as Mr. Miller handed back our tests. These experiences revealed my love for helping others to learn, so I decided to volunteer at Common Denominator, a free tutoring center in New York City. From a young age, my parents ingrained in me the importance and power of education, and I wanted to offer a helping hand specifically to low-income students, who had less access to quality education. More than any other tool and resource, providing kids with education can help them succeed. Growing up a short distance from NYC, I resonated with the youth from the city; once a week I would take a bus across town to tutor. Every interaction I had with students at Common Denominator was incredibly fulfilling. Above all, my interactions and work with Jacob were probably the most meaningful because of what they taught me about myself.
“So you carry over the one if the numbers add up to more than 10 and then add the right column and then keep on going. And that’s it!” I looked up with a smile, pleased with my explanation of
