UW personal statement My sister and I share a bathroom, a task that, for most, would become increasingly more frustrating as we grew up. Yet, throughout the years, we have created a near-flawless schedule that rarely, if ever, leaves us bumping heads or knocking on the door, pushing for the other to hurry up. It was a finely tuned system, her waking up fifteen minutes before me and readying herself before I awoke. As such, alarms should have been ringing in my head the day she was late. I waited outside the bathroom for five minutes before the door creaked open, my sister finally shuffling her way downstairs; I, more focused on my AP biology test that day, offered a small ‘hi’ and moved along with my day, unaware the next time I would see her was nearly two weeks later, packing her bags for a three-month residential stay halfway across the world.  With her, she brought not only her shoes and a shirt or two that may have been mine; she also took my mother on this international trip, traveling across time zones and country lines. I was left in a foreign country with an active-duty parent who was still expected to travel for his job and spend long hours at work. My father was also coping with the change in his own way, frequently opting to stay at work or disassociate through the seemingly endless amount of time spent on video games, leaving me, who was accustomed to being greeted at the door after school with a homemade snack awaiting me on the counter, alone.  This was understandably a shock to my system. I found myself experiencing life and growing on my own: taking on an ankle surgery with only my thoughts to calm my nerves, making every meal which resulted in giving myself food poisoning, and then having to care for myself throughout that, all while pressing forward with school and handling the pressure that came with. It was, in truth, terrifying to grow up at such a rapid speed, taking on responsibilities I had never been accustomed to and taking on them alone. But it was essential. There was no choice on whether or not I fed myself or my dog, whether or not I continued to walk to school, whether or not I continued to grow. Yet, growth came unexpectedly. For a while, I fought connection and help from others, taking on the situation and the everchanging circumstances on my own. However, as time progressed, I struggled in ways I never had before; I was overwhelmed by all that was expected of me, scared for my family, and, truthfully, exceedingly lonely. But my community stepped up. I was offered shoulders to cry on, given homemade meals, and whisked away to movies and events. Friends
