UCSB acceptance rate 2026: 38.3% is Fall 2025 data

UC Santa Barbara has not yet published Fall 2026 applicant and admit totals. The latest official UCSB first year acceptance rate is 38.3% for Fall 2025.

The University of California admissions profile reports 110,178 applicants and 42,170 admits. It also reports a middle 50% high school GPA range of 4.09 to 4.28 using the UC calculation.

Do not relabel that 38.3% figure as the Fall 2026 result. Students were admitted for Fall 2026. But the UC public data page had not added that cycle's totals by July 16, 2026.

This is a good example of why “acceptance rate 2026” can mean two different things. It might refer to data published in 2026, or to students entering college in Fall 2026. Those are not always the same cohort.

The short answer

Here is the accurate version as of July 2026:

UCSB's own data page calls the numbers a general guide to selectivity. It warns students not to treat them as a personal prediction. That warning is exactly right.

Why a campus rate can move

A campus rate can move when the university changes its number of offers or enrollment target. Residency mix, waitlist use, and campus capacity can shift it too. One percentage contains several school decisions.

It also means you should not assume that a 38.3% campus rate applies equally to every college or major.

UCSB does not review every major the same way

UCSB's official eligibility and selection page explains how the campus handles its three undergraduate colleges.

For the College of Letters and Science, choice of major is generally not considered in first year admission. Dance and music performance are exceptions because they require auditions.

For the College of Engineering, demand is high and the intended major matters. UCSB says it will not consider an alternate Engineering major. Applicants who want an alternate should select a major in the College of Letters and Science.

For the College of Creative Studies, every student must complete a supplemental application reviewed by faculty. Students should also select a second choice major outside Creative Studies.

This makes one campus wide rate especially limited. A prospective computer engineering applicant should not read 38.3% as a program rate. UCSB has not presented it that way.

UCSB is test free

UCSB will not use SAT or ACT scores in admission decisions or scholarship selection. The campus may use scores after admission for course placement, but they do not strengthen the file itself.

That changes where you should spend your time. There is no strategic SAT submission question to solve for UCSB. Your grades, course choices, activities, duties, achievements, context, and Personal Insight Questions have to carry the file.

UC uses thirteen review factors. The official UC review page starts with the UC GPA and work beyond the minimum course requirements. It also considers advanced classes and the senior year schedule. Growth, talents, leadership, and achievements matter too. Readers judge that work in the context of each student's opportunities.

Minimum eligibility is not the same as selection. A California resident needs at least a 3.0 UC GPA to meet the basic requirement. A nonresident needs at least a 3.4. UCSB's latest admitted range sits far above both minimums.

What the GPA range means

The 4.09 to 4.28 range is a UC GPA range, not a universal high school GPA scale.

UC calculates grades in approved college preparatory courses and applies its own rules for honors points. Your school may display a different weighted GPA on the transcript. Comparing the two without recalculating can create a false sense of strength or weakness.

The middle 50% range also leaves one quarter of admitted students below 4.09 and one quarter above 4.28. It is descriptive, not a cutoff.

If your UC GPA falls inside the range, UCSB is not automatically a target. College and major choice still matter. The rest of the application must show what you did with the options you had.

If your GPA falls below the range, one strong Personal Insight response cannot erase it. Ask whether your record shows improvement. Check whether your senior course plan is demanding. Use the extra comments only when your context explains the number without making excuses.

Build the UC list before obsessing over UCSB

UC Santa Barbara may be realistic for more students than an 11% private university. But 38.3% is still not a safety rate.

Put UCSB inside a broader list. Account for residency, intended college, major demand, cost, and the unknowns in a full file review. The nine undergraduate UC campuses make separate decisions. An admit at one campus does not predict the answer from another.

The Personal Insight Questions are not decorative

UC first year applicants choose four of eight Personal Insight Questions, with a maximum of 350 words for each response. UC says all eight questions receive equal consideration.

The prompts are not asking for four polished personal statements. They ask for useful facts about your experiences, choices, achievements, duties, and context.

Direct writing usually beats a dramatic opening. State what happened. Explain what you did. Show the result or change. Then make clear why the experience matters to the way you work or think now.

Do not repeat one activity four times from slightly different angles. Across the four responses, the reader should learn several distinct things about you.

A campus average cannot show how one student's courses, major, activities, and writing worked together.

What applicants for Fall 2027 should do now

UCSB says the next UC filing period runs from October 1 through November 30, 2026. That application is for Fall 2027 enrollment. It becomes available earlier so students can begin entering information.

Use the summer in this order:

1. Calculate your UC GPA correctly.
2. Confirm how UCSB treats your intended college and major.
3. Build a full UC and non UC college list.
4. List activities, work, family duties, and school context.
5. Choose four Personal Insight Questions that reveal different information.
6. Draft for substance first and style second.

The 38.3% figure is the best official benchmark available today. It tells you that UCSB is selective. It does not tell you the unpublished Fall 2026 rate, the rate for Engineering, or your personal probability of admission.
